NEWS ROUNDUP: Coronavirus cases & unemployment rises
A further 679 cases of coronavirus were reported across the North East and North Yorkshire on Monday.
Sunderland and Northumberland saw the highest recorded cases in the North East with 75 and 57 respectively.
The hospitality sector has responded to the announcement of how lockdown will be eased. Businesses in the North East said they were excited to be able to welcome back customers once again, but that it doesn't make sense that close contact services like hairdressers and barbers can resume normal service before restaurants can open their indoor areas for customers.
The unemployment rate in the North East is higher than the national average. The North East England Chamber of Commerce has said the
statistics continue to expose the regional disparities in the pandemic’s economic impact, with the regional unemployment rate standing at 6.5%, significantly higher than the UK’s rate of 5.1%.
