NEWS ROUNDUP: Ambitious council budget & canine cop
County Durham's council budget, that includes investing millions in frontline services, has been approved.
Councillors heard that robust planning had placed the local authority in a better position than many to respond to current challenges, allowing it to continue to invest in the services residents rely upon.
New shops and homes could be coming to a village in North Tyneside. Developers want to build on land on Backworth Business Park. Concerns had previously been raised about the plots close proximity to the fruit and vegetable plant and disruption to the ecology of the area. A decision is expected in May.
A suspected drunk driver was successfully arrested thanks to the keen sense of smell of one member of the Northumbria Police force. The suspect fled the scene on foot after being signalled to stop by patrol cars, but within minutes was tracked down by police dog Wren. The suspect is due in court next month.
