CLIMATE CRISIS: Northumbria University embark on a new project to gain more insight into our planet’s climate

Renowned for its research into modern and ancient environments, it's no surprise that Northumbria University has just been awarded a grant for a project assessing the permafrost in Siberia.

It is hoped that the results will offer more insight into the behaviour of frost and ice over the course of history, allowing for more accurate assessments and prediction of our climate today and in the future.

Permafrost

The trouble with permafrost is that as the planet warms due to man made climate change, the frost releases fossil carbon into the atmosphere, further increasing the speed at which the temperatures are increasing.

Councils across the UK have already made climate promises, most vowing to become carbon neutral by 2030. But, is this enough? Dr Breitenbach would argue no, and that more must be done, and quicker.
