Domestic Abuse specialists have repeated Cleveland Police’s on-going commitment to tackling coercive and controlling behaviour after a man was jailed for the offence as well as for assaulting a young woman he was in a brief relationship with.
It was alleged that over a few months from 2019-2020 Jamane Yare, 30, supplied the woman (who was in her late teens) with drugs, isolated her from family and friends and made threats of violence before physically assaulting her several times.
Yare was arrested in February 2020, charged and remanded. He appeared at Teesside Crown Court yesterday where he was given a 2 year 6 month sentence - as well as an indefinite restraining order which forbids him from contacting or approaching his victim. Detective Constable Steven Neale of the Domestic Abuse Unit said: “I welcome the sentence given to Yare and hope it brings a degree of comfort and of closure to his victim.
“We would always encourage people to report coercive and controlling behaviour to police or to specialist agencies – either regarding themselves or on behalf of another person. Help is available and we will do all we can to bring perpetrators before the courts.”
