An investigation was launched into the incident and two people, a 42-year-old female and a 37- year-old male were arrested in connection with the collision. They have since been released under investigation.
Those arrested were travelling in another vehicle on the A19 at the same time of the collision. Enquiries into the circumstances behind how the vehicle came off road are ongoing.
Police are now urging any witnesses to come forward.
Sergeant Craig Bartle, of Northumbria Police, said: “We would like any witnesses to the incident, or anyone who was travelling south through the Tyne Tunnel at the time to get in touch.
“Please check your dashcam footage and let us know if you saw a Ford Mondeo on Saturday night at around 10.20pm in the area where the collision occurred. Even if you did not witness the collision, we would like to see any moments leading up to the collision to help us determine what happened.
“We are committed to finding out the circumstances behind this collision and our enquiries are ongoing.”
