FATAL COLLISION: Man dies in fatal collision on the A19

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision on the A19.

Officers are investigating a collision that took place at around 10.20pm on Saturday April 17. A report was received that a grey Ford Mondeo had been involved in a collision on the A19 southbound, near Jarrow cemetery.

Sadly, the driver, a 26-year-old man, was found deceased at the scene.  His next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specialist officers at this difficult time.

An investigation was launched into the incident and two people, a 42-year-old female and a 37- year-old male were arrested in connection with the collision. They have since been released under investigation.

Those arrested were travelling in another vehicle on the A19 at the same time of the collision. Enquiries into the circumstances behind how the vehicle came off road are ongoing.

Police are now urging any witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Craig Bartle, of Northumbria Police, said: “We would like any witnesses to the incident, or anyone who was travelling south through the Tyne Tunnel at the time to get in touch.

“Please check your dashcam footage and let us know if you saw a Ford Mondeo on Saturday night at around 10.20pm in the area where the collision occurred. Even if you did not witness the collision, we would like to see any moments leading up to the collision to help us determine what happened.

“We are committed to finding out the circumstances behind this collision and our enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police by calling 101 or using the Tell us Something page on the Northumbria Police website,  quoting log 25 180421.
