OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: MP Ian Mearns discusses the proposed European Superleague and the teams withdrawal from the plans

Ian Mearns Super league reaction as teams announce plans to withdraw.
MP for Gateshead and Chair of the all parliamentary group for football supports, reacts to the latest developments surrounding the European Super League.
In the House of Commons, Mp for Newcastle Chi Onwurah shared her thoughts shortly after the announcement of the European Super League earlier this week.

And Almost as quickly as it was announced, the English teams involved in the European Super League withdrew from the competition. The pressure was on, with fans, football bosses, pundits and the government all coming down hard on the 6 teams to stop these plans that would have seen players banned from the premier league and from playing for their national team. The MP for Gateshead, Ian Mearns, lead backbench MPs in their opposition to the plans. We spoke to him to get his reaction to the latest developments.

As well as being a passionate football fan, Mr Mearns is the chair of the all party parliamentary group for football supporters. We discussed one of the arguments put forward for the super league, which is that younger people, namely those in the 16-24 age bracket aren't as interested in football.
