NEWS ROUNDUP: Newcastle spice deaths & councillors urge government to stop Nestle closure

 

Newcastle spice deaths and councillors urge central government to step in to stop the closure of the Nestle factory.

In Newcastle three people have died and 11 taken to hospital after consuming what is believed to be a particularly dangerous batch of the drug spice. Arrests have been made in relation to drug offences and manslaughter. The Police are warning anyone who may be in possession of the drug to refrain from taking it.

Northumbria Police have said - “Eleven suspected drug dealers have been arrested and drugs have been seized following a thorough investigation into recent drug supply in Newcastle.

“Officers began their investigation following the deaths of three men in Newcastle over the bank holiday weekend.

“The deaths are thought to relate to the drug Spice and an investigation was quickly launched to find those believed to be responsible.

“Following extensive enquiries officers began making arrests in connection with their investigation.

“A total of eleven people have now been arrested in the Newcastle area – nine males, 14, 23, 26, 27, 27, 35, 36, 43 and 44 and two women, 25 and 33.”

Nestle closure
Local councillors are calling on the government to intervene in the planned closure of the Nestle factory in Fawdon. Councillors have written to Boris Johnson urging him to step in on the matter, or to ensure Newcastle receives significant investment to soften the blow should to closure go ahead.

Local elections

It's the week of the local elections. People will be heading to the polls to vote for councillors, police and crime commissioners and mayors on Thursday. Remember there will be coronavirus regulations in place and voters should bring a face covering and their own pen to mark the ballot paper.
