FURLOUGH FATE: Calls are being made for the furlough scheme to be extended
The latest data reveals a mixed picture of the North East’s labour market.
The figures do show signs that the Government’s furlough scheme is effectively limiting job losses and stabilising the labour market. However the regional disparities in the pandemic’s economic impact are concerning with the regional unemployment rate standing at 6.5%, significantly higher than the UK’s rate of 5.1%.
In the North East, around 150,200 people are still furloughed from their jobs. This is up from 126,300 in December.
We also asked Niamh what the strategy should be for people who are worried about their future employment status, to put them in as strong a position as possible as we look beyond the furlough scheme.
