COVID UPDATE: Let’s take a look at the current state of coronavirus in the North East

We are taking a look at the current state of coronavirus in the North East of England as a change in the rules means fully-vaccinated adults no longer have to isolate if they come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.

Cases of coronavirus seem to have plateaued in the UK, with many now preparing for when schools restart, and the surge of cases that are expected.
But, it is believed that hospitalisations and deaths will not see a similar increase as the vaccine does its’ work. Let's take a look at the local picture with the director of public health in Gateshead, Alice Wiseman.

The latest change to the coronavirus rules means that over 18s who have been double jabbed, and children, no longer have to self isolate if they have been in close contact with a positive case.

They are however advised to take a covid test, wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces and limit contact with those in the vulnerable categories.

Concerns have already been raised about the potential for a surge in cases in September when students return to educational settings.
In an attempt to stop this situation from getting out of hand, the vaccine will be offered to 16 and 17 year olds ahead of the new academic year.
And it appears that in the North East, hospitalisations related to covid are decreasing.
The virus is of course still there and we should all remember to take precautions, but Alice said she is feeling more confident about the current state of the situation than she was just a few weeks ago.
