NEWS ROUNDUP: Battery bin warning & Harrison Ford enjoys lunch at a Newcastle restaurant


Third incident of battery fires in Gateshead sparks fresh warning and Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford has been enjoying what the North East has to offer.

Fresh warnings about binning batteries have been issued after another bin lorry fire. Workers were forced to tip waste onto Balmoral Drive in Felling after another incident in Gateshead. Batteries are a fire hazard when crushed with paper and card.

South Tyneside poverty problem

Efforts to combat poverty in South Tyneside are expected to increase as councillors announce plans to explore the issue in depth in the borough. The increased use of food banks and rising numbers of those on universal credit has led to the decision to establish a sub committee to explore the issue further.
Labour’s Cllr John McCabe, chair of the People Select Committee, said work is continuing to ensure the best steps are taken in a bid to help tackle poverty where they can.
He said: “We’re in a position where we’re ready to go and we want to make sure we go down the right track, and not deviate onto the wrong track.
“At the end of the day, it is for the residents who are suffering out there in South Tyneside borough, we know that, you just have to look at the growth in food banks and the use of food banks, Universal Credit, there are problems there.
“There are problems with people losing employment, there are a whole host of issues there.”

Indiana Jones and the delights of the North East

Harrison Ford took some time out of his busy schedule for some lunch at Khai Khai in Newcastle. The Indiana Jones star is currently filming the fifth instalment of the franchise at Northumberland's Bamburgh Castle and has been making the most of his down time, enjoying the sights of the North East.
