FOOD & DRINK FEST: Get your teeth stuck into a whole programme of events as the Sunderland festival returns for 2021

Sunderland Food & Drink Festival returns for 2021!

To show off some of the amazing restaurants & food outlets in the heart of the city, Sunderland Food & Drink Festival is making its comeback in June with a programme bursting full of virtual events and demonstrations featuring celebrity chefs, alongside the chance to treat yourself a private dining experience in some of the cities finest venues.

After the cancellation of the festival last year due to the pandemic, the team at Sunderland BID wanted to make sure local businesses had the opportunity to flourish now that lockdown restrictions are easing and we look forward to the rest of the year. Sharon Appleby has more.

The festival is looking a little different this year to not only account for coronavirus, but to deliver a much needed boost for local business owners, doing away with stalls and instead encouraging people to enjoy what's already there.

Acclaimed French chef, Jean Christophe Novelli – who was a huge hit when he appeared in person at the first festival in 2019 – will be running a number of cook a long sessions, as well as an event where he will talk about his life and answer questions.

Food lovers can also tuck into virtual classes with television chef, Rustie Lee, who is as well known for her raucous laugh as her culinary expertise.

Great British Bake Off finalist, Alice Fevronia, has also been signed up to appear, bringing a touch of the tent to the festival.

And to ensure that youngsters also don’t miss out, CBBC’s Stefan Gates, who combines cooking with science and fronts up tv’s Gastronuts, will be running some online sessions.

Other events involving local restaurants and cooks will also be announced in the near future, along with an ambitious community cake decorating event.

So are people in Sunderland eager to get back out there and enjoy the summer events on offer in the region now that lockdown restrictions have eased?
