GET THRIFTY: The Festival of Thrift is returning to Redcar later this year!

The Festival of Thrift is back for 2021.

The weekend is a celebration of all things sustainable, where traders and visitors can interact and discover more about the small changes people can make to help their pockets whilst helping the environment. And the team behind the event want to use this years celebration as a helping hand for those who have had to struggle financially due to the pandemic and the restrictions that came with it.

The package of support Emma is referring to hopes to provide training and trading opportunities throughout the year for vendors, including an increased digital marketplace, pop-up events and business-focused support, making sure that local businesses, and even those further afield, have everything they need to bounce back from the financial challenges of the pandemic.
If everything goes to plan and we are able to stick to the roadmap out of lockdown, this year's festival will be taking place on the 25th and 26th of September in Kirkleatham near Redcar, once again entertaining visitors and teaching them about all the small, simple ways we can help combat the climate emergency, no matter what your budget.
Festival of Thrift Traders and Workshops Manager Kate James says that the festival is looking for a range of businesses and traders that match the festival’s aims, who are ambassadors and practitioners of the event’s sustainable ethos.

“The stalls are an important part of the ambience of our weekend event and we want to ensure that visitors can enjoy browsing and buying from a good range of traders. We’re aiming for a mix of festival favourites and newcomers offering products people cannot find elsewhere.”

Kate added: “From the outset we recognised that we don’t want traders to have to pin everything on our September weekend event which is why we’re creating additional opportunities to support them in the run up to our event and beyond.”

Recently appointed to oversee Festival of Thrift’s traders and workshops, Kate brings a wealth of previous experience of working on a wide range of events including eight years with Bishop Auckland Food Festival (BAFF).

She has also been involved as a Zone Manager at every Festival of Thrift event since 2014.

“I am really pleased to be more involved with this year’s Festival of Thrift as it’s one of my favourite festivals to work at,” she said. “It’s a fabulous challenge where I can put my knowledge of working on the ground at the event and my experience of working with traders at BAFF to really good use too.”

Festival of Thrift’s Executive Director Emma Whitenstall said: “It’s great to welcome Kate back to the team this year in her new role. Her experience at BAFF and other events is a great asset for the festival as well as the traders she’ll be working with and supporting.

“This is a unique opportunity to help boost thrifty and sustainable independent businesses and traders and they should grab it with both hands!”
