Historic 199 steps need a chairlift: Whitby tourists have their say

Tourists have taken to Trip Advisor saying Whitby’s historic 199 steps need a chairlift for better access, but some tourists say it would spoil an iconic piece of history.

Whitby is famous for its myths, legends and iconic architecture and history. The 199 steps that lead up from the bay towards the iconic Whitby Abbey are also famous, attracting tourists from across the country. They were originally made from wood, until 1774 when they were replaced with stone. It is thought that the 199 steps were once used as a test of Christian faith to those who wished to worship in St Mary’s Church, which also stands at the top.

Despite the rich history, tourists have taken to Trip Advisor saying the historic 199 steps needs a chairlift to be installed to allow better access to the steps. Some tourists, however, have said that this would spoil the aesthetic of the historical site.

There are occasional benches placed up the staircase, allowing visitors to take a break when ascending. At the top, you will be greeted by stunning panoramic views of Whitby, the North Sea and even as far as the North Yorkshire Moors on a clear day.

Do you think a ‘chairlift’ should be installed up the steps? We asked tourists on site whether they agree or disagree with the proposed plans.
