LOCAL ELECTIONS: A new candidate is looking to shake things up this May
The government has announced that they do intend to hold local elections in May, claiming that British democracy “should not be cancelled because of COVID”.
Though some had called for a further delay to what is being dubbed as ‘Super Thursday’.
According to research conducted by YouGov, more than one in six British voters feel they would be unsafe at the polls, citing concerns around social distancing, large crowds, and proper cleaning of equipment. Many councils are urging residents to opt to vote by post to combat these fears.
If these elections do go ahead as planned, residents in one area of Sunderland will notice a new name on the ballot, as Chris Smith will be running for the first time.
The firefighter from Sunderland never thought he'd end up in politics, but feels that now is the time for him to make a real difference, especially given the events of the past year.
I spoke to Chris about this career change and the events leading up to his decision.
