Here’s your latest update for national news including rail industry’s warning against traffic jams and business closures and asks commuters to start travelling by train again, harsher fines for cold callers debated and the big winners at the NTAs.

TRAVELLING BY TRAIN: The rail industry has warned that city centres could be hit by a "double whammy" of traffic jams and business closures unless workers resume commuting by train. The Rail Delivery Group said train commuting was at just thirty three percent of pre-pandemic levels, while car journeys had reached close to their pre-Covid volume.

COLD CALLERS: Tougher penalties for nuisance calls and text messages are being considered in a shake-up of data protection rules. Currently, the Information Commissioner's Office can fine firms up to five hundred thousand pounds but the Government wants bring it in line with GDPR, which carries a top penalty of seventeen point five million pounds. The move comes amid a spike in unwanted marketing calls.

NTAs: The National Television Awards have taken place at the O2 Arena in London. The ceremony featured performances by artists HRVY and JLS. Among the prize winners were Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly who won the best TV presenter prize for a twentieth consecutive time AND shows like The Great British Bake Off, Line of Duty and Gogglebox.
