The leader of Newcastle City Council had his leadership challenged by Byker Councillor.
Labour’s Nick Forbes survived a challenge by Byker Councillor Nick Kemp by 30 votes to 22. On election night (Thursday May 6), it emerged that Councillor Kemp would be challenging the current leader for his position, following Labour’s disastrous results in the local elections.
But after winning a majority of the vote on Monday night, Councillor Forbes will hold the position for another year, however, there is expected to be some significant changes within the leading party.
Labour lost two of their seats in Newcastle to Independents in the outer west of the city in the local elections, but managed to hold on to their majority with 52 out of 78 seats.
Forbes has lead the city for a decade, first taking up the position in 2011. He has been leader of the Labour group since 2007.
Councillor Kemp previously worked alongside Forbes as part of the cabinet, but made the decision to leave last summer following a bitter row after he claimed he was constantly being undermined in the party with “constant sniping” and “personal animosities”.
