NEWS ROUNDUP: Dentist delays & County Durham’s first female leader

People in the North East are experiencing serious challenges in getting dentist appointments and County Durham elects first ever female leader

Cases of coronavirus are increasing in North Tyneside, Newcastle, Sunderland and Gateshead. Efforts to contain the spread have been ramped up in North Tyneside. But cases are on the decline in County Durham, South Tyneside and Northumberland.

Dentist delays

Over a third of people asked in the North East have found it challenging to get a dentist appointment. Lockdowns early in the pandemic restricted dentists to providing emergency care only, with practices still continuing to catch up. A report has found that private appointments are available but are too expensive for many people in the region.
Durham County Council leader
A council has elected its first female leader in its 132 year history. Liberal Democrat Amanda Hopgood has been announced as the new leader of Durham County Council. Councillor Hopgood said she's looking forward to working in partnership with colleagues from other groups to achieve the common goal of ensuring the county is able to prosper.
She added “over the coming weeks and months, I will be setting out my plans to address our community priorities; promote economic regeneration; and improve health and social care, especially the provision of mental health services.

“I want to ensure all our young people have access to better and fairer education and make a serious impact on our climate change emergency."However, our ongoing recovery from the pandemic has to be our first priority, and I will be working to ensure that we get a fair deal when it comes to funding and opportunities.”
