Chief Officer Dale Checksfield of Durham Police said he had the pleasure of meeting Prince Philip when he was a young man, a memory that he cherishes.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen released a statement. He said : “With my humble duty I wish to express, on behalf of the people of Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool, our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Queen and the Royal Family following the deeply saddening news of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

He goes on to say I would like to express my deep admiration for the service His Royal Highness has given to this country. His immense contribution to public life will be sorely missed.
