UNDERVALUED & UNDERFUNDED: GPs have been struggling throughout the pandemic with a lack of government support

GPs are feeling undervalued and underfunded
A healthwatch report has highlighted a chronic lack of funding and support for GPs during the pandemic. This in turn has left patients feeling frustrated at the ever changing policies on how best to provide care - varying from over the phone, to online, to face to face, with some unable to get the latter. This, according to the BMA, has led to unfair criticism of practices over the past year, which has resulted in the  demoralisation of hard-working practices teams, and does not reflect the reality of what practices were doing.

Dr Rae told me that, despite the government boasting the highest number of doctors and nurses ever, that there simply aren't enough. And this, coupled with the mammoth task of having to roll out a mass vaccination programme as quickly as possible, has added to the strain even further. So are more doctors and nurses going to be recruited?

Looking ahead, and to the idea of a vaccine passport that would allow people to visit certain venues, Dr George Rae said as of yet the BMA has no policy on this, but did say that Medically there is evidence of some vaccinated people catching covid within months and that vaccination may still result in transmission...
He added that Vaccination is very important but is one of the many tools which are needed to stop spread and he feels there would be lots of logistic problems with passports and that this could be problematic in general practice.
