LESSONS FROM EURO 2020: Gateshead MP Ian Mearns discusses what we’ve learnt from the tournament

We discuss what football and other large scale events can learn from the Euros as football fans headed back to stadiums in their thousands, with Gateshead MP Ian Mearns.

There are probably a few reasons why we'll remember Euro 2020, including how the tournament could shape the future of football as we have been told we must learn to live with Covid-19.

Cases of the virus are the highest they have been in months, but large scale events are set to continue - with many now looking ahead to the start of the football season next month.

In the wake of England's nail biting win over Denmark, We caught up with Gateshead MP Ian Mearns, who chairs the All party parliamentary group for football supporters to find out how the tournament has impacted the fans.

App woes
Fans in the stadium had to prove they were vaccinated or present a negative coronavirus test result which brought with it some problems. There was allegedly some chaos outside the stadium as thousands tried to access the NHS app at the same time, causing it to crash.
And unfortunately there does seem to be some indication that coronavirus cases amongst young men are on the rise as people have been congregating to enjoy the football together.
So there are risks to mitigate and precautions to take, but Ian is certain that the tournament has been an incredibly uplifting experience for the fans.
The final
England will play Italy in the final round of Euro 2020 on Sunday 11 July. Kick off is at 8pm.
