PERFECT APPOINTMENT: Nigel Pearson is the new Bristol City manager

Bristol City have confirmed that Nigel Pearson is the club's new manager.

Pearson replaces the outgoing Dean Holden who was sacked after a dismal run of form.

The former Leicester City and, more recently, Watford boss joins on a short-term deal.

His contract is reportedly only until the summer at which point both sides can re-evaluate their positions.

Perfect timing

BS3Talk's Owen Maers described the managerial choice and timing of the appointment as "perfect".

"With Nigel Pearson in charge, I think they've [Bristol City] got an experienced head who knows how to get into the playoffs," Owen told Local TV.

"He knows how to get a team promoted. I think really he is the perfect appointment at the perfect time."

Pearson almost saved Watford from relegation in the Premier League last year.

He took the job with the team looking a lost cause and picked up victories against Manchester United and Liverpool.

Despite giving them a fighting chance, Pearson was sacked before the end of the season.

No nonsense Nigel Pearson

Dean Holden was sacked after a run of form that is relegation-worthy.

Another defeat at home to Barnsley made it seven defeats in a row, questions are being asked about the current crop of players at Ashton Gate.

"I think Nigel Pearson as well is just a man that will sort out the culture at the club," Owen added.

"In recent weeks, I think it's shown that players have pretty much downed tools. They haven't looked motivated, they haven't looked energised.

"Nigel Pearson won't have any of that. It will be a no-nonsense approach from the start."

The playoffs and a route to the Premier League are the ultimate aim for the Robins.

Nigel Pearson is the man now tasked with delivering that vision.

It probably won't be this season unless they go on a miraculous run.

However, if he shows enough in his short-term deal, he may enjoy an extended stay at Ashton Gate.

If he brings Premier League football to the Robins, it will be the perfect appointment.
