FOOTBALL FUN: Berwick’s first full size 3G football pitch now complete
Brand new football pitch
Work is now complete on Berwick’s first ever full size 3G artificial grass pitch which will provide high quality football facilities for young people and adults in the town, right throughout the year.
Unfortunately, due to the current lockdown restrictions eager footballers will have to wait a little longer before they can put their ball skills to the test.
The new pitch will be managed by Active Northumberland and is situated on the current leisure centre site in Tweedmouth. It is suitable for football matches but with the flexibility to reconfigure it for training purposes or smaller sided games and junior matches.
Outdoor football changing facilities will be incorporated into the new Berwick Sports Centre and floodlighting will be available to permit play on dark winter evenings.
Northumberland County Councillor, Jeff Watson cabinet member with responsibility for health lives said:
“This is great news for the local sporting community. The new facility will be a fantastic incentive to encourage outdoor activities for all as we emerge from the impact of Covid-19 and it will provide a fantastic base for football development.”
“We are very grateful to the Premier League, The FA and the Government through the Football Foundation for their grant and support of grassroots sport.”
A grant of up to £500,000, 76% of the total project cost of £755,000 has been awarded by the Football Foundation. which provides grants towards developing new or refurbished grassroots football facilities.
Northumberland County Council will make up the £255,00 balance of the costs as part of its wider investment in leisure in the town.
Mark Warnes, Acting Chief Executive of Active Northumberland said:
“The all-weather facility will be used by schools and local clubs to train players and coaches, providing greater opportunities for local people to play the game all year round.
“I know local football clubs are very excited about having access to such a great facility on their door-step which will help to improve grassroots sport in the area and get even more people involved in this popular team sport.”
The 3G pitch forms part of a wider £21 million county council investment in sport and leisure for Berwick. Work is now well underway on the building of a state-of-the-art new sports centre which will incorporate a five-lane, 25 m swimming pool, a teaching pool and leisure pool and spa facilities.
There will also be a sports hall, a gym, indoor bowls, fitness studios, cafe and a soft play area.
Since 2000, the Football Foundation Funding Partners’ investment has provided 290 grants worth £16m towards grassroots sports projects worth over £30m across the whole of Northumberland County FA region.
