HALF TERM: Have some virtual fun this half term with County Durham

HALF TERM: Have some virtual fun this half term with County Durham

Virtual cookery demonstrations, arts and crafts sessions and fun ideas to try at home are just some of the free activities on offer for County Durham families this half-term.

Durham County Council’s Fun and Food programme provides activities with healthy food during the school holidays when it can sometimes be a struggle for families to keep youngsters fed and entertained.

The council invited schools and voluntary and community sector organisations to apply for funding through its 14 Area Action Partnerships (AAP) to deliver Fun and Food activities over the May half-term (31 May to 4 June). A total of £47,167 was awarded to support 47 projects across the county.

There will be a mixture of virtual and face-to-face sessions on offer, along with home activity packs. All activities will be delivered in a Covid-secure way in line with current guidelines.

Over the Easter Holidays, 6,000 children enjoyed Fun and Food activities and it is hoped the half-term programme will prove just as popular.

Lindsey Davison, Fun and Food co-ordinator at Durham County Council, said: “Our Fun and Food programme aims to relieve some of the pressure that falls on families during the school holidays by providing fun things for children to do, plus some healthy meals and snacks to keep rumbling tummies at bay.

“We are delighted to be working with our excellent schools and community and volunteer sector to offer this action-packed programme. There are some really great activities on offer, and I would encourage people to check it out.”

Stacey Deinali, of ATOMS, said: “We are absolutely overjoyed to receive funding for our Activities with ATOMS project. The funding will allow us to support many children and their families over the half-term holidays by providing a healthy meal and resources for an art, science or music activity.

“We have had an excellent response to our projects in the past and so we are extremely happy to be able to provide activities once again in the May half-term.”
